WHY GIVE TO THE Y

According to YMCA Summer Day Campers, swimming is one of the best parts of each day! Not only is it fun to make a splash, it’s a great way to keep cool and active. Fun is part of the YMCA, but so is safety.

Go For Green is a program that provides FREE Swim lessons to kids in our Summer Day Camp. All kids who attend camp are required to take a swim test to determine their comfort level and swimming skill in the water. If a child does not pass the swim test they will receive FREE swim lessons through the Go For Green program. Funds raised through the YMCA Annual Campaign make programs like Go For Green possible.

About Go For Green: The swim test consists of entering the pool without using stairs or a ladder, swimming the length of the pool, treading water for 1 minute, and then exit the pool without a ladder or stairs. It is a tough test but a necessary one for evaluating their skills and confidence in the water. Once assessed, swimmer wear a swim band indicating where they are allowed in the pool. If a child does not pass the test, they are given an orange or yellow wristband. These children receive the FREE swim lessons until they pass the test. Once they pass, they will receive a green band, hence the name, Go for Green!
