For young teens between the ages of 13 and 15, finding opportunities to grow, learn, and make a meaningful impact can be challenging. It's especially hard for kids those ages to find positive ways to get active during the summer months. That’s where the Counselors in Training (CIT) program at the Gateway Region YMCA comes in. Designed as a bridge between being a camper and becoming a full-fledged counselor during the summer, this program offers teenagers a unique chance to develop leadership skills, build confidence, and form lifelong friendships while contributing to their community.

What is the Counselors in Training (CIT) Program?

The YMCA CIT program is a leadership development initiative aimed at teenagers who have a passion for working with children, enjoy being part of a team, and are eager to take on new responsibilities. Participants gain hands-on experience by shadowing camp counselors, assisting with activities, and learning how to manage groups of younger campers. Training and a 4-week commitment are required if selected after completing an application and interview process. It’s more than just a summer program—it’s an investment into their future.

Why is CIT Perfect for Teens?

  1. Leadership Development 🚀

At the heart of the CIT program is leadership. Teens learn how to communicate effectively, problem-solve, and adapt to different situations—skills that are not only essential for camp, but also for life! They get to take the lead on small tasks and eventually grow into more significant roles, helping them understand what it means to be responsible and reliable.

  2. Building Confidence 🌟

For many teens, stepping into a role where they’re seen as a mentor can be intimidating, especially if they’ve never had to do it before (though being an older sibling absolutely counts!). As CITs engage with younger campers and see the positive impact they’re making in their lives, their confidence blossoms. Over time, they learn to trust their instincts, voice their ideas, and embrace challenges.

  3. Developing Job-Ready Skills  💼

The CIT program is the perfect first job for teens, equipping them with a variety of skills that are valuable in any future workplace. Time management, teamwork, conflict resolution, leadership, and even basic childcare skills are just a few of the lessons they’ll walk away with. Plus, many teens who complete the program go on to become paid counselors in the following summers, giving them an early start in their professional journeys.

  4. Fostering Lifelong Friendships 💕

CIT participants often form tight bonds with their peers as they navigate challenges and celebrate successes together. Working on a team creates a sense of camaraderie, and many participants leave the program with friendships that last far beyond the summer months. Many CIT alumni return to the Y to work alongside their peers as counselors in future summers, ensuring these friendships last even longer!

  5. Giving Back to the Community  👐

There’s something incredibly rewarding about being a role model for younger campers. Teens in the CIT program experience the joy of giving back, knowing they’re making a difference in the lives of others. This sense of purpose can be transformative, encouraging them to continue contributing to their communities in the future through volunteer opportunities and more activities.

A Stepping Stone to a Bright Future

The CIT program is more than just a summer activity; it’s a stepping stone to a bright and successful future. By participating, teens gain skills and experiences that help them stand out on college applications and job resumes. More importantly, they discover who they are, what they care about, and what they’re capable of achieving.

How to Get Involved

If you know a teen who would thrive in the CIT program, encourage them to apply! Many Y locations have limited spots, so it’s a good idea to start the application process early. Whether they dream of working with kids, want to strengthen their leadership abilities, or are simply looking for a fun and meaningful way to spend the summer months, the CIT program could be exactly what they (and their parents!) need. For teens ready to step up, make an impact, and grow in ways they never imagined, there’s no better place to start than with the YMCA!
