This program is tailored to the literacy and English language needs of adult students. We provide instructional materials but also encourage students to bring things they want to read so they are building skills that help them at home, at work, and in their community.

Potential students will meet with one of our staff members as part of the registration process. This appointment usually lasts about 1 hour and will include a discussion on the student's goals, availability, and an English language or literacy assessment. To schedule an appointment contact Michelle Peeler, michelle.peeler@gwrymca.org or 314-776-7102

We partner with libraries in the bi-state region to provide this program at convenient locations throughout the community. Students and tutors can also meet at a YMCA location near them.

Our adult students meet with their tutors 1-2 hours weekly for a year at a library that is convenient for them. The tutor and student will work on specific skills the student needs to meet their English language goals.

Is there a cost to this program?
This is a free program for adults struggling with English language and literacy skills.

Do I have to be a YMCA member to participate in this program?
No. This program is a free program we offer to our community regardless of YMCA membership.

Can I register a family member/friend for this program?
Due to the student commitment level of this adult program, we ask that the potential students reach out to make the appointment. We understand there are situations when that might be difficult for some and we are happy to have a family member/friend assist the student in the contact for registration.
