Unplug. It's good for you

You finish dinner, get the kids to bed, and sit down to check your phone for “just a minute” only to look up hours later and realize the night is gone. Sound familiar? If you’re like most people, you’re nodding your head yes right now.

From email to social media to the 24-hour news cycle, technology is always with us demanding more of our time and attention leaving many of us feeling stressed out, over-stimulated and unsatisfied.

A 2017 survey by Deloitte and www.bankmycell.com found these statistics:

47: The number of times a U.S. smartphone user checks their phone

85% of smartphone users use their phone while in the presence of friends and family

35% of users check their phone within 5 minutes of going to sleep or waking up

While technology is great, there is something to be said for turning the phone off, logging out of social media, skipping the news for a day, and spending time doing the things you used to do. You know, before your phone became an extension of your body and you were available 24/7. Here are just a few of the benefits of unplugging:

1. Recharge your mind

2. Become more present

3. Improve sleep

4. More time for other activities

5. Get a break from eye and neck strain

Sound like a win? Try it! Next time you find yourself reaching for your phone or telling yourself you’re only replying “to this one email,” stop, put the phone down, and walk away. Instead of relying on technology, try something different like reading a book, playing a board game with your family, taking a walk, or simply sitting uninterrupted in silence letting your mind rest.
