You're ready for Parent/Child Swim Lessons!

The parent/child swim program introduces infants and toddlers to the joys of swimming for the first time under the care and love of their parents. As a parent, you will learn about the importance of supervision, water safety, and how to encourage and guide your child to become more familiar with being in the water.

Your Level is Stage 1: Water Acclimation

In stage 1, students develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage lays the foundation that allows for a student’s future progress in swimming. Parents and guardians are welcome to enter the water with children, but it is not required.

Your Level is Stage 2: Water Movement

In stage 2, students focus on body position and control, directional change and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. Parents and guardians are welcome to enter the water with children, but it is not required.

You're ready for Stage 3: Water Stamina

In stage 3, students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.

You're ready for Stage 4: Stroke Introduction

Students in stage 4 develop stroke techniques in front crawl and back crawl, and they learn the breaststroke kick and butterfly kick. Water safety is reinforced through treading water and elementary backstroke.

You're ready for Stage 5: Stroke Development

Students in stage 5 work on stroke techniques and learn all major competitive strokes. The emphasis on water safety continues through treading water and sidestroke.

In stage 6, students refine stroke techniques on all major competitive strokes, learn about competitive swimming, and discover how to incorporate swimming into a healthy lifestyle.

Wow, what a swimmer!

Based on your answers, your swimmer has already mastered the skills taught in our most advanced group swim lessons class. We encourage you to consider participating in a YMCA youth swim team. Or contact the Aquatics Director at your local Y to ask about additional swimming instruction opportunities that may be available to you including our competitive swim teams.
