Open to students completing grades 9-12
Earth’s population has 12 years to reverse the damage that is being done to the planet before it
becomes irrevocable. Currently, the planet holds 1.8 billion youth between the age of 10-24 (the
largest youth population in history). This population will be most directly affected by the outcome of
the next 12 years. They are also the most creative, innovative, and passionate age group in the
world. They have the basic tools to save the planet. They need the education, resources, and
experience to put those tools into practice in creating solutions to the world's problems.
The Gateway Region YMCA is partnering with local St Louis community service organizations to
provide a unique opportunity for a one-week conference-style experience hosted on Washington
University’s Campus. Student participants will be educated on the United Nations Sustainable
Development Goals as a framework to address local and global issues. Students will then travel to
local organizations to address the goals through action and community service.
Serve Your City will give students an experience that ignites a passion within them to improve the world, and St Louis, in measurable ways. Upon completion of the program, participants will have provided a minimum of 15 hours of service to the community and will have completed and presented a community action project to spark their future efforts.
Associated Costs: $325
Daily breakfast, lunch, and transportation for field trips will be provided.
